POSTGRADUATE SUPERVISORS

The success and quality of postgraduate education largely depend on effective and efficient supervision of postgraduate students. Postgraduate students generally face multi-fold problems due to poor supervision. Whereas some students exhibit academic independence, others display a high level of dependence in their expedition of research. Mentorship and guidance through adequate supervision of students’ thesis is therefore critical in ensuring quality of postgraduate studies and timely completion. However, most supervisors are self-taught and draw from inbuilt and cumulative experience over time. In such a context, a novice supervisor finds challenges and could be frustrating to students’ progress. A deliberate training programme will help empower supervisors with the relevant skills, improve the quality of graduate training and completion rates.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING

  1. Have a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor, expectations of, and relationships with students.
  2. Acquire knowledge and skills in postgraduate training, inter-cultural competences, mentorship, and strategies for supervision.
  3. In-depth knowledge about various research methodologies and techniques to guide students in conducting high quality research.
  4. Better understanding of new trends and contemporary issues in supervision of postgraduate students.
  5. Enhanced regional collaboration among postgraduate supervisors

METHODOLOGY OF THE TRAINING

The training will adopt a more active engagement of participants characterised by open discussions, online tasks and some mentorship sessions. Mentors or facilitators will take the role in guiding presentations, discussions and mentorship. This training will follow the modules developed by IUCEA. Some of the modules will be delivered purely online while others will be blended to allow both physical and online participation.
